GSTAAD - THE PULL OF THE MOUNTAINS
by Info Grenfell

The Grenfell team recently toured to enjoy the early Autumn transition in Gstaad, Canton of Bern in SW Switzerland. The draw of the British to the Alpine regions has been going on for over a century, indeed the Alpine Club was founded in 1857, as the world’s first mountaineering club. The beauty and enormity of the landscape soon reveals why pilgrimages for both religious and personal achievement have been undertaken for centuries. Grenfell clothing, with its revolutionary new cloth, replaced Burberry as the chosen climbing suits for expeditions from 1933 on Mount Everest. It was lighter and offered superior weatherproofing against the most adverse weather conditions on the planet. In fact, it was so versatile that it was even used for tents on Everest, providing the highest ever habitation at that time.

We were back in the mountains, glaciers and lakes of Switzerland to once again test the Grenfell product range. Since those early days, we have created many iconic performance pieces, and in recent seasons we have added numerous future classics for consideration and punishment.
The Pembroke Jacket is one such modern iconic and versatile Grenfell piece. The modern anorak, or soft shell jacket, is now the ‘go-to’ piece for any adventurer. The Pembroke that we tested is seen here in a camouflage print, befitting of a piece that owes much to military design roots. It has high levels of weatherproof functionality and optimal storage options.

Other styles under the microscope were the Scafell parka and Bowfell jacket ensuring we had adequate styles to test in such a lofty environment.

Gstaad is also famous for luxury relaxation after the body has been pushed to its’ limits. And as the home of many glamorous individuals, until sadly recently passing, 007 himself, Sir Roger Moore. Hard to imagine an individual who lived the Grenfell values more fully. A life of action, luxury, travel; and like our founder Sir Wilfred Grenfell, Sir Roger dedicated much of his life to charitable pursuits. The spirit of these two pioneering men is certainly felt in this most rugged landscape.

A full life is about moments of high exhilaration, and times of calm to reflect. Our relaxation was provided courtesy of the Huus Hotel in Gstaad. A classic chalet exterior complex, that conceals the best of modern design and service experience, that money can deliver. A uniquely welcoming host, Gunther, and team deliver on every level.

The environment again proved the perfect testing ground and backdrop for the Grenfell collection. It is too easy to cocoon away in urban building ranges, but the merits of being out here in the wild feels immeasurably more fulfilling.
